Measuring for Drawers - Tips & Tricks
- It is always best to first decide what thickness the drawers will be.
Solid wood drawers are usually 5/8″ thick material and Baltic Plywood are
generally 1/2″ thick material. - Next decide what type of slides you will use. The most common today are undermount full extension slides.
Such brands include Blumotion, King Grass, MUV among others.
The other style of slide is called side mount full extension, the most common brand of these is Accuride. - When measuring for undermount full extension, it is important to read the
manufacturers paperwork as to the space required for the slide length.
They are almost always noted in millimeters, so be aware of conversion.
In general, you want to measure the inside of the cabinet width. This is the
clear open width space available inside the cabinet. Then deduct the amount
the manufacturer suggests, in order to obtain the final finish drawer width.
Do the same with the depth of the cabinet to obtain the deepest drawer
possible for the space. - To determine the height of the drawer, a common practice is to make the
drawer 2″ less in height than the finished drawer face that will be applied
in the front.
There may be small adjustments or differences to these rules, but in general, these tips are a good place to start.
- Side Mount Slides (Accuride) To determine the final width of the drawer,
measure the inside (rough cabinet opening) and deduct 1 1/32″.
For the depth, measure the inside clear opening depth of the cabinet and find the
closest slide length that will comfortably fit. Side Mount Slides are generally
attached roughly half way up the drawers height.
Diamond Custom Woodworking will do the rest. We will confirm with you about any
special needs of the drawer. This would include obstructions in the cabinet, such as electrical
or plumbing issues, scooped pullouts, undermount slide notching, etc….
